I STARTED SEEDS, YOU CAN TOO!

Want to start a fall home garden? Don’t be intimidated. I promise you, not only is it more than possible for you to grow – it’s easy! This is why we started Garden Labs – a simple online store and YouTube channel dedicated to spreading the long-collected knowledge we have acquired, while providing only products that are tested and used by us. Join us! It’s fun and healthy, and we’re here for you every step of the way.

Currently, we have no plants growing right now. Which means it’s time to start some seeds! If you’ve been following along, we really enjoyed our last harvest. We made some incredible candied jalapeños from the big jalapeño plant we grew, some delicious kale chips, and now, it’s just time for a reset. I have some fresh seeds that I need to get started for the basement garden, and I want to take this opportunity to teach you how to start yours.

Let’s do it!

Grab your favorite seeds for your fall home garden.

Mine are sweet basil, lemon drop basil, cilantro, jalapeno, kale, parsley… okay okay, I don’t have a favorite. Pick your favorites.

For all you cat lovers out there, I’m also going to start some catnip, as well as seven different tomato varieties. (Yes, seven. We’ve got a fun tomato experiment coming up. Stay tuned.)

Gather your supplies for your fall home garden.

Aside from seeds, here’s what you’ll need, along with a link to order them if you don’t already have them.

We’ve got our seeds. We’ve got our trays and lids.

Fertilizer for a fall home garden.

I always like to start my seeds with a full dose of fertilizer. Some of you are gonna say, “no, their little seeds, they can’t handle the fertilizer.” But when you really think about it, in nature, a seed drops into the dirt. Does the dirt have lower or higher fertilizer rates at that point? Neither. It just is what it is. And the truth is, seeds actually start quicker when they have a dose of fertilizer with them. If you have no fertilizer in your medium at all, the seeds and seedlings will struggle from the start. So don’t be afraid. Dive right in.

For best results, I highly suggest using the Masterblend Fertilizer three-part kit, found here

Prepare your pellets for your fall home garden.

Pour your pellets into a bowl and soak ‘em in some pH balanced, fertilized water.

My starting fertilizer strength: 600 – 900 ppm (1.2 – 1.8 ec)

My solution pH: 5.5 – 6.5

Now, load your pellets into the tray. Label them, and add your seeds. Yup, just plant ‘em right in there. Seeds are pretty cheap, so just plant plenty of extra.

Tomato seeds are really small, so you don’t have to plant them deep at all. Just a light little covering. And the truth is, you saw from our last video, even large seeds don’t even really need to be covered that much.

I really like starting with pellets like this because they can go into anything from this point. It can go into a hydroponic system, soil, you’ve got all the options.

Plugs… pellets… really great. Here’s another great plug.

Don’t forget to put on the lid, and place these bad boys in a safe space under some light. That’s that! We are all set. Seeds are planted and ready to go.

Final notes on starting fresh seeds for a fall home garden.

Give them some time, watch them every day, make sure they stay moist. If they get dry, they will die. (Hmm that kind of rhymes.)
